On
May 2, 1995 the bull trout,salvelinus confluentus,became the provincial
fish of Alberta. Bull trout are actually a char and closely related to other members of
the char family such as lake and brook trout. Bull trout generally have light-coloured
spots on their bodies and do not have any dark spots or markings on their dorsal fins.
Depending on their environment and food supply, they can attain weights of 20 pounds or
more and can live more than 20 years. The slow growth of this unique species makes it prone to over fishing,
precisely why its status was elevated. The bull trout, one of eight species of trout, is
often confused with the brook trout. |
